Anthro Inspired Hat

I fell in love with this hat from Anthropologie, and knew I could recreate something similar.

It's no longer available for sale.  But, when it was, it retailed for close to $50.  I couldn't justify spending $50 on a hat, especially a hat that I could figure out how to make for myself!

I would rate this pattern as intermediate, because some parts are a bit tricky.  Feel free to email me if you have questions about this pattern and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Anthro-Inspired Hat

Materials:
*H Hook
*Caron Simply Soft Yarn in Soft Blue (This hat takes less than 1 skein.  In fact, you could probably get two hats from 1 skein!)
*Yarn needle

HAT:

Make a Magic Circle, ch 2.
R1: 8 DC in center.  Join with sl st in top of first DC.
R2: Ch 2.  2 DC, ch 1 between each DC of previous round.  Join with sl st in top of first DC.
R3: Ch 2.  2 DC in same space.  Ch 1.  3 DC in next space.  Ch 1.  *[2 DC, ch1, 2 DC] in next space.  [3 DC, ch 1] in next 2 spaces*  Repeat * - * to end of round.  NOTE: The repeat will not be fully completed at the end of round.  Crochet into each space, but finish the repeat in whatever space you end up in.  For example, in the video I ended rounds 3 and 4 with [2DC, ch 1, 2DC].  Join with sl st in top of first DC.
R4: Sl st in next stitch, and in the next space.  This brings you to the first space of the round.  Repeat R3.

I've added this video to help clarify rounds 3 and 4.  Please let me know if it helps and if there is anything else I can do to help!

R5: Ch 2.  2 DC in same space.  Ch 1.  *3 DC in next space.  Ch 1.*  Repeat *-* to end of round.
R6-7: Repeat R5
R8-11: Ch 2.  2 DC in same space.  *3 DC in next space* Repeat *-* to end of round.
R12: Ch 2.  DC in each stitch around.  Join with sl st in top of first DC.
R13-14: Insert hook from inside of hat to outside of hat in the next space.  Insert hook in next space.  Your hook should now be surrounding the next stitch.

Yarn over and sl st.  Ch 3.  FPTC (Front Post Treble Crochet) around each stitch around.  (To FPTC:  YO twice.  Insert hook around stitch as you just did, from inside of hat to outside, then back inside the hat on the other side of the stitch.  YO and pull up two loops. YO and pull up two more loops.  YO and pull up last loops.)  Join with sl st in top of first FPTC.
R15: Shell Edging:  Ch 2.  6 DC in next stitch.  Skip 1 stitch.  1 SC.  *Skip 1 stitch.  6 DC in next stitch.  Skip 1 stitch.  1 SC.*  Repeat *-* to end of round.  Join with sl st in top of first DC.  Tie off.
Flower:  Honestly, this is the trickiest part of the hat!  Feel free to sub in whatever kind of flower you like if this turns out to be too confusing.  I explained it as simply as I can, but I just know I'll get emails about this one.  :)

Ch 4.  Join with sl st.
R1: Sl st in center of ring.  *Ch 3.  Sl st in ring.*  Repeat *-* to a total of 4 times.
R2: *Sl st in ch 3 sp.  Ch 2.  5 DC in space.  Sl st in same space.* Repeat in each ch 3 space around.
R3:  Sl st in next space, around chains from first round.  5 TC, sl st in same space.  Ch 3.  Repeat in each space around.
R4:Sl st in next ch space from previous round.  5 TC, sl st in space.  Repeat in each space around.

Tie off and leave a long tail to sew flower onto hat.

  1. Good for you for figuring it out! You did a great job on this!

  2. This hat is adorable. How do I figure out how to size it for my head. Everything is usually way too big for me.

    1. I added 2 more DC in round 1 and 1 more row of 8-11, came out perfect:)

  3. Thanks!

Gigi, I made this hat in a child size, but the yarn and the stitches used really gives it a lot of room to grow. I am a petite woman, so I generally make hats a little smaller than patterns call for. You may want to try the pattern as shown and see if it fits in the child size. If you need to make it bigger, repeat round 3 another time (after the repeat in round 4.) If you should find you need to make it smaller than the original child size, leave out round 4.

Also, just want to point out that the hat is slightly larger on the top than it is on the bottom. In round 8, we start to leave out the ch 1 between the sets of DC stitches, which decreases slightly to give you a snug fit closer to the band of the hat. I actually first made up this hat about a year ago and I didn't decrease starting in round 8, I just continued the pattern and it flared out a little at the bottom. That looks fine, too, in fact I wore that hat all last winter. But, this time around, I just knew I wanted it to have a better fit.

I hope that all makes sense!

  4. Yes, it all makes sense. Thanks soooooo much. This is going to be a challenge for me, but I am up to it. I would consider myself a tiny bit beyond beginner. I learned to chain as a child, but SC and DC I learned from watching the old folks and they never used a pattern. I am 67 so that tells you how long ago this was. So, with the help of You Tube, and what I know already, I am learning how to read a pattern and how to actually put everything together to MAKE something. This is going to be my after Christmas project, when I have a clear head. If I struggle, scream, and cut my yarn into confetti, I will be ordering one from you.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ha ha Gigi!! I have had my screaming, cutting yarn to confetti moments as well. I hope this one doesn't put you over the edge! ;) Feel free to email me any time (lwdesignadventures@gmail.com) if you need some crochet help. I had a How-To video series going and I will gladly add videos of any techniques you (or any other user) may want help with!

  7. Beverly, I plan to make a video to show the flower techniques. It's a bit tricky, and the stitching can be tight. Unfortunately, I am getting backed up on some Etsy orders that have to be out this week to customers to ensure Christmas delivery, so I need to finish those before I can sit down and make a video.

But, I hate to leave you hanging like that! So, in the meantime, try this flower out: http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/pattern.php?id=4612&lang=en

The technique for this flower from Drops Design is very similar to the technique that I used, creating the layered effect. I hope that helps you out for now and I will get on that video as soon as I get all caught up!

  10. Hi there! This is such a cute hat, so thanks so much for posting this pattern! I am pretty new to crocheting and for some reason I'm getting stuck on Row 2 (the ironic thing is I understand Row 3 and 4). After the magic circle and chaining 2, do I make 2 dc in the next 2 stitches, chain 1, and then dc in the next stitch, chain 1, dc in the next stitch, chain 1 and so forth? Many thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  11. are you done yet... hehe just kidding, I just want the flower you have and I'm having trouble with it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @eileenslee: Row 2 is a repeat pattern like Rows 3 & 4. The difference is the pattern is [2DC, ch 1] in each space around. It took me a few minutes to figure it out too. =)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wonder if the magic circle is easier than amigurumi style? That's how I start every hat and the video on the how-to for the magic circle seemed similar. Have you done amigurumi starts, design adventures?

    ReplyDelete
  14. My apologies, I don't think I will get a video done this week to help out. :( After Christmas (when all of the orders have been given out) I plan to make a video for the flower and a video on some techniques for the hat. I'll do it as soon as possible, but I still have several orders to get through and I am going out of town in a few days. Busy week!

Beth, I don't have any experience in amigurumi. It looks very interesting to me and I have seen a TON of projects using amigurumi that I have loved, but I have never learned the techniques! I think it may be something I need to look into in the new year!

  15. Having a tough time after starting this hat three times and ripping it out as it is totally a ruffel. So...on round two do I do 2DC and chain 1 in each space meaning each stitch or into each "HOLE" that we have begun? I'm really confused. If anyone could just email me I'll get it faster. Thanks.

  16. I just made this for my aunt as a chemo cap. I used Caron Simply Soft in Country Blue since I had some left. I had trouble with the flower, but I probably could have figured it out without the 2 year old's "help". I found a single five petal flower pattern somewhere else and made it two sizes and connected them. It's pretty cute. I almost kept it for myself!

  27. I have been trying to figure it out for days, and I have no idea how to do row 14. I got through 13, but I don't know where I'm supposed to put my stitches for 14.

Also, I'd add in the pattern that you have to slip stitch each row. It took a moment to figure that one out as well.

  28. Hi! Loving this hat! But I have a question. I have a pretty big head (22 inches)and I was wondering if this hat would fit my head. Even if I would add another row like the third, after repeat of the 4th row. If not, what could I do to make it even bigger? I'm just a beginner at crochet, so...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ashley, did you ever determine what is causing the ruffly or curling of the hat? Mine is like that too, and I've followed the instructions to a "T" online and on her video. I've ripped it out numerous times! Help!

    ReplyDelete
  34. It may be a problem of gauge? I did not specify a gauge, but I've found it to be of particular importance with hats. I apologize for not providing that. I think I tend to stitch a little looser than others I have seen. Perhaps you could try a bigger size hook and see if that helps.

  35. Rows 8-11, do I do a chain st after each set of double crochets? (meaning the 3 DC in each hole)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I made this hat shortly after it was posted & it turned out very nice! Thank you so much for sharing it. It really is a super sweet hat...a definite favorite!! Thanks again!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for the pattern! It is so awesome! I made a few adjustments, used a smaller hook and took a couple of the rows out, made the shell stitch a single crochet instead of a double, and only two layers to the flower and it made a wonderful baby hat instead. My second completed crochet project, (I did have to take some rounds out several times) and it turned out beautifully! A great gift for a friend's new arrival! Thanks again.

  38. I fell in love with this pattern the first time I saw it. I am ready to try it, but I have difficulty with my vision. Is there any way I can print this pattern? I have to enlarge the font considerably in order to see it. The way this pattern is laid out on the page seems too complicated for me to just highlight and print the text. Do you possibly have the pattern without the pictures?

  39. Oh my gosh, so adorable! I just finished following the pattern and it came out perfectly.

To all the people wondering about their rounds looking like a giant ruffle, you are putting too many dc's. They only go in the group spaces, not every stitch. Try reducing and you'll see it come out straighter.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I did it!!! I made this hat with a lighter yarn and a smaller hook and it was perfect for my friends baby. I had trouble with the flower but it too turned out ok for a first try!

  42. Hi! Love the pattern and am in the middle of trying it out. I noticed a small mistake in the pattern, for round three.

You state, "*[2 DC, ch1, 2 DC] in next space."

I was pretty sure you meant, "*[2 DC, ch1, 2 DC, ch 1] in next space." Because of how the pattern lays out, that makes sense; but I was trying to just follow your pattern. Just to check though, I watched your video...where you did indeed do a "2 DC, ch1, 2 DC, ch 1] in next space" vice the "*[2 DC, ch1, 2 DC] in next space."

Just figured you would want to correct this small thing.

Thanks again for figuring this out. I saw a very similar hat at Cost Plus and you saved me the brain work of figuring out how to make it! :-)

  43. Hello,

I came across your adorable hat on Pinterest and am now dying to make it!! I'm an experienced crocheter, but for some reason cannot figure out Round 2. Do you treat the Chain 2 as a double crochet? How many double crochets are there supposed to be when you're done round 2?

  48. Hi. I love this hat! I watched your video which really helped. However, I did 10 rounds and continued to do the slip stitch at the beginning and the hat came out pointed on one side! So I ripped it out back to row 5. I don't see another slip stitch in the instructions between rounds 5 through 12. Without the slip stitch, the beginning of the round doesn't look right. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, for your help.

  51. Do you think me using red heart super saver (from walmart) will work on this hat?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It will produce a completely different result. Caron Simply Soft yarn is thinner, softer and somewhat silky. Red Heart Super Saver is a bulky yarn, thick, and has a different texture. Your sizing will be different as well. I'm sure it can be done with pretty good results, but you'd have to experiment with it a bit.

      Delete
    2. I made this hat lastnight using the red heart yarn and it turned out just fine. I was wonding how to make it bigger for a women. I know you said in an earlier comment to repeat round 3 after first completing round 4. Once you do the 2nd round 3 do you yet again repeat round 4 or just move on to round 5?

      Delete
  52. I believe it's the bulky, thicker type of yarn that is causing the ruffling some have mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How could I make this bigger for middle school/high school ages? I made the hat. It is absolutely adorable! The pattern was easy. There was only one thing wrong. My stitches are so tight! I had to use a 'J' hook and it fits a 6-8 year old child. I thought of using an even larger hook, but I think it would make the finished project look a little too hole-y. lol What rules would I use to add more rounds?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love the hat. It made up quickly, just a few hours. I did not care for the finished flower, though. I thought it was too bulky. I made 2 four petal flowers and just overlapped them edge to edge, one above the other. I think it turned out well!. Thank you for the pattern.

  67. I am pretty sure your pattern is missing a "ch 1" on row 3, and presumably on row 4. the pattern does not have it, but you chained 1 after the 2nd DC in your video. If you leave out this chain 1, then on row 4, the "next space" will only be between the 3DC, making the hat bunch up instead of keeping a flat circle like in your video. Thank you for sharing, but if I am correct, i think it will clear it up for everyone.

  78. hi by the looks of all the comments ppl got down this pattern, but to me it was poorly written. first of all if you going to say work in next space of a dc you can't say both dc st or space to confusing. and when saying to work in a ch space you have to call it the ch-1 space not just space cuz i did not know if you was talking about the ch-1 space or the dc st. 2nd your "insert hook from inside of hat to outside" part is called a BACK POST DC ST. Adding counts of your stitches at end of each row lets the reader know they on track. like R2 (16dc, 8 ch-1 spaces)

  80. Somebody needs to rewrite this pattern its all wrong. Just saying. CH 2 counts as first DC and should be told on NOTES: at beginning. Your video instructions are not being written down right on pattern for example: video shows you on R3 doing [2 DC, ch1, 2DC, ch1] but written down you left out the last ch1. Each group of DC are made in CH-1 SPACES. Most importantly R3 and R4 end wrong in pattern cus you have the beginning of rows started wrong. The pattern of each row has to have an even pattern sequence all the way around, you can't just say oh just DC the remaining sts. You start with a set of 3dc and end with a ch-1 space. You started your first set of 3 DC in the first DC of previous row instead of first actual ch-1 space leaving end of row [2dc,c2,2dc,ch1] bunched up with no ch-1 space when joining. I SAY IT SHOULD READ>>>>>>> R3: sl st your way to first ch-1 space making a sl st in the ch-1 sp. ch 2. 2 DC in same ch-1 sp. ch 1. 3 DC in next ch-1 sp. ch 1. *[2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC, ch 1] in next ch-1 sp. [3 DC, ch 1] in next 2 ch-1 sp* Repeat * - * to end of round ending with a [2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC, ch 1] group. Join with sl st in top of first DC. 42 sts. (30 DC, 12 ch-1 spaces)

    R4: Repeat R4. 56 sts. (40 DC, 16 ch-1 spaces)

  83. I don't know what I'm doing . I understand and am able to follow the pattern. I am trying to make it for my 4 month old daughter. I've made it and pulled it apart. And I'm making it again. But it's coming out very small. Very confused as to why my hat is very tiny when others are saying it runs big?
